The effects of large scales on the inertial range in high-Reynolds-number turbulence

چکیده

The effects of removing large scales external to the inertial range on the properties of scales within the inertial range are studied in a high-Reynolds-number turbulent flow. Structure functions of both even and odd orders are strongly affected across the entire inertial range, but odd-order moments are affected to a greater degree. In particular, the skewness of velocity increments shows a significant reduction whereas the flatness changes comparatively little. The reduction in skewness is counterbalanced essentially by the interaction between the small-scale energy and the large-scale rate of strain. The implications of these results for the conventional cascade picture are examined briefly. PACS Numbers: 47.27.Ak, 47.27.Jv

Small Scale Anisotropy in Axisymmetric Turbulence

We experimentally investigate the presence of anisotropy from the inertial to the dissipative scales in homogeneous turbulence. We employ an apparatus in which two facing arrays of randomly actuated air jets generate turbulence with negligible mean flow and shear, over a volume several times larger than the energy-containing eddy size. The Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale is varie...

On the strength of the nonlinearity in isotropic turbulence

Turbulence governed by the Navier-Stokes equations shows a tendency to evolve towards a state in which the nonlinearity is diminished. In fully developed turbulence this tendency can be measured by comparing the variance of the nonlinear term to the variance of the same quantity measured in a Gaussian field with the same energy distribution. In order to study this phenomenon at high Reynolds nu...

Kinematic simulation of multi point turbulent dispersion

As three particles are advected by a turbulent flow, they separate from each other and develop non trivial geometries, which effectively reflect the structure of the turbulence. We investigate here the geometry, in a statistical sense, of three Lagrangian particles advected, in 2-dimensions, by Kinematic Simulation (KS). KS is a Lagrangian model of turbulent diffusion that makes no use of any d...

On the Rapid Increase of Intermittency in the Near-Dissipation Range of Fully Developed Turbulence

Intermittency, measured as log (F (r)/3), where F (r) is the flatness of velocity increments at scale r, is found to rapidly increase as viscous effects intensify, and eventually saturate at very small scales. This feature defines a finite intermediate range of scales between the inertial and dissipation ranges, that we shall call near-dissipation range. It is argued that intermittency is multi...

Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Subsonic Compressible Flow through Rectangular Microchannel

In this study, turbulent compressible gas flow in a rectangular micro-channel is numerically investigated. The gas flow assumed to be in the subsonic regime up to Mach number about 0.7. Five low and high Reynolds number RANS turbulence models are used for modeling the turbulent flow. Two types of mesh are generated depending on the employed turbulence model. The computations are performed for R...
